Most homeowners in Benton and Washington County expect hail damage to look like damage — holes, missing shingles, something visible from the driveway. It almost never does. A storm that will take years off a roof frequently leaves it looking, from the ground, exactly as it looked the day before.
That gap between what the damage is and what it looks like causes two opposite mistakes. People ignore a roof that has genuinely been hit, and people file claims on roofs that are simply old. Both are expensive.
What a hailstone does to a shingle
An asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat, saturated in asphalt, with ceramic granules embedded in the surface. The granules are not decoration — they are the roof's sunscreen. They take the UV so the asphalt underneath does not, and asphalt exposed directly to Arkansas sun oxidises, hardens and cracks comparatively quickly.
When a hailstone hits hard enough, two things happen at once. It knocks granules loose, exposing asphalt in that spot. And it fractures the mat underneath — a bruise, not a hole.
Press a thumb on a fresh hail hit and it gives slightly, like a bruise on fruit. That is the mat, broken. Water does not pour through it. The roof does not leak that afternoon. But that spot now ages at a completely different rate from the shingle around it, and multiplied across a few hundred strikes per roof plane, the effective life of the roof drops from years to a fraction of what was left.
This is why hail claims are frequently settled on roofs that are not leaking. The damage is real and the leak is simply in the future.
Why the soft metals matter more than the shingles
Here is the thing most homeowners do not know, and it is the single most useful piece of information in this article.
When an adjuster is deciding whether a storm actually struck your house, the shingles are often the weakest evidence available. Bruising is subjective, it is arguable, and on an older roof it looks a great deal like ordinary wear.
The gutters, downspouts, roof vents, window wraps and any metal fascia are not arguable. They are soft aluminium, and hail dents them visibly and permanently. Those dents establish that hail of a damaging size fell on that specific property on that specific day — which is the argument the shingles were struggling to make on their own.
So when we document a roof after a storm, we photograph the soft metals as carefully as the shingles. If you are documenting it yourself before anyone arrives, do the same.
Telling hail damage from an aging roof
Both look like granule loss from a distance. The distinction, mostly, is pattern.
Hail damage is random. Strikes scattered across a slope with no order to them, heavier on the elevation that faced the storm. The hits are roughly circular, they have a dark centre where the asphalt is exposed, and the mat gives underneath.
Age is patterned. Granule loss concentrated in the runoff paths, at the bottoms of slopes, and below valleys where water and grit run. Uniform, gradual thinning across a plane. Shingles curling at the edges or cracking in straight lines. And it will be worst on the south and west slopes, which take the most sun — one of the most reliable indicators that you are looking at age rather than a storm.
Blistering is neither. Small pockmarks from moisture trapped in the asphalt during manufacture, which pop over time. They look enough like hail hits to fool people and they are not a covered loss.
A common third case in Northwest Arkansas: an old roof that has also been hit. Both are true, the roof needs replacing, and the argument with the carrier is about how much of it the storm caused.
What to do after a storm
Do not climb on the roof. Wet or hail-scattered shingles are genuinely dangerous, and walking a bruised roof adds damage that muddies the assessment.
Photograph what you can reach. Gutters, downspouts, the AC condenser fins, window wraps, the mailbox, garden furniture. All of it dates and sizes the hail.
Note the date. Policies have filing deadlines measured from the date of loss, and a year later "sometime last spring" is a problem.
Get an inspection before you file. A denied claim goes on your record, and filing one on a roof that is worn rather than damaged helps nobody. Any reputable local contractor will tell you when a claim is not worth making — and a company that tells you every roof it looks at has a claim is telling you something about itself.
Be careful about who knocks on the door. Northwest Arkansas fills with out-of-state crews within days of a significant event. Some are fine. The test is whether they can give you an Arkansas address and a registration number, and whether the phone will be answered in three years when a flashing detail needs attention.
One more thing, and it is not a matter of preference: in Arkansas a contractor cannot legally absorb, waive or discount your deductible. Anyone offering to is proposing something that is treated as an unfair and deceptive practice — and telling you a great deal about how they will handle the rest of the job.
Impact-resistant shingles
If your roof is being replaced anyway, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are worth a conversation. They are tested against a steel ball dropped to simulate a hail strike, and they survive the marginal storms that would bruise a standard shingle. They are not hail-proof; nothing is.
What usually decides it is insurance. Most carriers offer a premium discount for Class 4, and over the life of a roof that discount frequently covers a meaningful share of the upgrade. Ask your carrier what theirs is worth before you choose a shingle, not after.
